Sempervivum Calcareum (Hens and Chicks) are commonly known as ‘Old Man and Woman’. This mat-forming succulent perennial has thick fleshy leaves with evergreen rosettes. Growing up to 3 to 8 inches in height, Hens and Chicks is a winter-dormant plant. It originates from Southern Europe and belongs to the Crassulaceae family.

Growth Rate

Sempervivum calcareum has a fast growth rate. It requires light to germinate and should be kept moist.

Flowering

This attractive houseplant blooms in lovely pink color throughout the summer season. It will send up a long stalk with small flowers. However, don't expect your Hens and chicks to bloom right away or every year.

Watering and Feeding

These drought-resistant plants require very little water. Water your Sempervivum calcareum only when the surrounding soil dries out, which is usually once a week in warm climates. This plant doesn’t require much fertilizer and should only be watered infrequently.

Soil

These plants grow successfully in full sun on average, dry to medium moisture, and well-drained soils. They accept poor soil conditions and flourish in sandy or gravelly soils. Sufficient drainage is required.

Hardiness

Old Man and Woman is a succulent-like plant that belongs to the hardiness zones of 4 to 9 and is winter hardy with the frost tolerance of -1° C (30.2° F).

Light

Plant this succulent in full sun exposure for the best health and growth. It thrives in rock gardens, where heat is reflected off the rocks.

Propagation

Hens and chicks plants are easy to propagate by hand as they produce new offsets or "chicks" on horizontal stems. Simply remove a chick from the mother rosette by cutting or gently pulling it.

Sempervivum Calcareum (Hens and Chicks) have fleshy, sharply pointed, pale green leaves with burgundy-red tips that are densely packed. These succulent plants are one of the finest options to gift.
