This cactus is a species of barrel cacti that are native to Mexico. It grows as a single light green cactus that get up to 16". Its spines range from white to reddish in color and are pretty flat. They flower during autumn to early winter. Their flowers are usually purplish yellowish and reach up to 4 cm long.

Ferocactus latispinus is commonly found at elevated places, almost 600 to 2,600 meters above sea level. The species has its origin in Argentina and goes by the common name 'Devil's Tongue.' Growing up to a height of 12 inches, the globose-shaped plant is modest-sized flat-topped growing solitary all its life. The winter-dormant cactus belongs to the Cactaceae family and requires full sun exposure to thrive. It has a characteristic slow growth rate but when cultivated, grows well.

Growth Rate

Ferocactus latispinus cacti are slow-growing, especially at the start. If well taken care of, they have healthy growth.


This plant bears white flowers during the blooming season, usually late spring, and lasts for about two weeks.

Watering and Feeding

Devil's Tongue requires plenty of water. However, one should not wet the plant body, especially when placed in the sun. It can cause sunburns on its body causing fungal infections.


Ferocactus latispinus requires good draining soil.


The hardiness zone for the plant is 9b to 11. It can withstand periodic light frost with a frost tolerance temperature up to -5ºC (23ºF).


The Devil's Tongue demands full sun exposure but ensures the plant body is completely dried out.


This solitarily growing cactus can be propagated from seeds only.
