Gymnocalycium baldianum goes by the common name  “Spider-Cactus” or “Dwarf Chin Cactus”. This cactus is bulb-shaped and has a small body that is semi-flattened. The plant is native to Argentina and belongs to the family of Cactaceae. Gymnocalycium baldianum does dormant in the winter time and it can grow up to a height of 4 inches.

Growth Rate

This cactus is known to grow at an extremely fast pace, usually blooming in the second year of growth.

Flowering

Gymnocalycium baldianum produces vibrant magenta, orange, purple-red, or white flowers. The flowers bloom freely in the spring and summer seasons.

Watering and Feeding

Spider Cactus has differing water needs. If you plant them in a garden, make sure you thoroughly soak them every 10 to 15 days. When planting in a container, water Gymnocalycium baldianum every 7-10 days. Do not water the plant in the winter season. Feed the plant a fertilizer that is high in potassium, especially during summers. 

Soil

Gymnocalycium baldianum needs a well-drained soil mix. For a quick potting mixture, mix an equal amount of cactus soil with coarse sand. 

Hardiness

Spider Cactus grows best in the summer and spring seasons. Its frost tolerance is -10° C (14° F) and its hardiness zone is 8b to 11b.

Light

The cactus requires bright and indirect sunlight. When in a garden setting, expose them to light and partial shade. Spider Cactus should be kept away from direct and full sunlight during the hottest hours of the day.

Propagation

The cactus can be propagated through seeds. Cultivate the seeds in early spring, when they are overripe.

Gymnocalycium Baldianum

Although shipping was delayed due to quarantine, which is out of the sellers control, it was very packaged well. This particular cacti was flowering during shipping but due to the delay, the flowers unfortunately are now withering (seen in photo).
