Are you an avid Gardener?  Are you tired of the same old plants taking up space in your garden? Do you crave something unique that will catch your eye every time you walk by?

Introducing the variegated jade plant or a money plant, a stunning succulent, also known as Crassula ovata 'variegated' or tricolor jade. Its pinkish-white star-shaped flowers bloom through late winter to spring, making it a true showstopper. Although it typically does not bloom indoors, this jade succulent's green and white variegated leaves are attractive.

Jade succulent is a Chinese good luck plant due to its coin-shaped leaves, which symbolize wealth and fortune. Imagine adding a rare and beautiful plant to your collection that develops into a woody, branching shrub that makes an excellent large bonsai tree.

If given the proper care, jade crassula can live up to 70 years. Although it grows slowly, adding only two inches to its height each year, this plant can grow to a maximum height of three to six feet.

Watering Needs

Although jade crassula is commonly associated with desert environments, some varieties, such as variegated jade plants, prefer to be watered using the "soak and dry" technique. This involves thoroughly watering the plant before allowing it to dry out between watering sessions completely. Both potted and outdoor variegated jade plants should receive a deep soak once or twice a month during their growth periods, ensuring proper drainage so that the roots don't become waterlogged.

Avoid watering your outdoor Crassula species when it's raining or during winter months.

Light Requirements

Providing enough light for these desert jade succulents is one of the most important aspects of their care. It is important to grow your jade plants in areas that receive at least 4-6 hours of bright, indirect light daily to keep them happy. Under bright sunlight, bright red margins appear on leaves that are up to 2 inches long.

If indoors, place your succulent directly in front of a west- or south-facing window. If they don't receive enough light, their stems may grow leggy and become paler and their spines will shorten; so, make your jade plant happy and give it plenty of light.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

The variegated jade plants prefer sandy, well-drained soil, as excess moisture can promote root and stem rot. Planet Desert specializes in succulents and includes an organic substrate with mycorrhizae to help with the growth of a healthy root system to help your succulents thrive.

As an alternative, you can create your own potting mix by combining equal portions of perlite, coarse sand, and good natural potting soil.

When it comes to fertilizers, organic fertilizers with an equal mixture of 5-10-5 (NPK) also last longer and keep your soil alive by adding other beneficial compounds and microbes that encourage plant health and nutrient absorption. So, skip those harsh chemicals and give your succulent some love with some awesome organic fertilizer!

Hardiness Zones & More

This jade tricolor, like the majority of Crassulas, can withstand some short-term freezing, but it will lose its leaves and eventually die in extremely cold or hot temperatures.

The variegated jade plant is an outdoor subtropical succulent, can withstand temperatures ranging from 30 - 50 F, and can be grown in USDA zones 9 and 11. In cooler zones, it can be kept outdoors during the summer and brought in as the temperature drops.

Be sure to add Crassula ovata 'Variegated jade plant' to your home or garden and enjoy its low maintenance care while admiring its impressive display year after year.

Pests & Common Problems of Crassula ovata 'Variegata'

This money plant, like most succulents, is susceptible to harmful mealybugs and, in exceptional cases, scale. It is recommended to inspect the plant frequently and use insecticidal soap or rubbing alcohol to remove any pests in order to prevent mealybugs and scale.

Root rot: To prevent root and stem rot, it requires well-draining soils

Leggy growth: If your compact jade plant has become more elongated and leggy, it may be in need of more light. Lack of sunlight, in particular, causes branches and leaves to stretch out in search of sunlight.

Brown spots: The most frequent cause of brown or dark spots on Jade plant leaves is sunburn or sun damage. This may occur specifically if the plant is exposed to full sun. Or if the plant was recently moved into a sunny area without being given time to adjust to the new environment. It is very common if you are relocating your Jade Plant outside after being indoors all winter.

Crassula ovata 'Variegata' FAQs

What is the luckiest jade plant?

The Crassula ovata, also known as the jade plant, is considered a Chinese good luck plant due to its association with wealth and prosperity in Chinese culture.

It is round, coin-shaped leaves are believed to resemble coins and symbolize wealth and fortune. Additionally, the plant is easy to care for and can thrive in USDA 9 - 11, making it a popular choice for bringing good luck into homes and businesses.

How much light does a variegated jade plant need?

The variegated jade plant requires bright, indirect light to thrive. Direct sunlight can scorch its leaves, so it's best to place it near a window with filtered light or in a shaded outdoor area. If the plant doesn't receive enough light, its growth may become stunted, and its leaves may lose their variegation.

Is variegated jade plant poisonous?

If ingested, it is regarded as poisonous to both humans and animals. Poisoning symptoms can include vomiting, diarrhea, and fatigue. It's critical to keep both children and animals away from this plant.

However, it is not toxic to the touch. While jade plants are generally safe and easy to care for, it’s important to be aware of their potential toxicity and take appropriate precautions to keep your family and pets safe.
