Mammillaria hertrichiana forms clumps to 1 m (3.3 ft) wide. Stems flattened globose, dull green, to 7 cm (2.8 in) in diameter. Tubercles irregularly angled, with much latex, axils with dense wool and some bristles. Central spines 4-5, needle-like, straight, stiff, brown, upper ones 5-10 cm (2-3.9 in) long, lower ones heavier and to 2.5 cm (1 in) long. Radial spines 12-15, white to pale tan, with dark tips, upper ones shorter, 3-10 mm (to 0.4 in) long. Flowers deep pink to purplish pink, to 10 mm (0.4 in) long and 18 mm (0.7 in) in diameter. Fruits club shaped, scarlet, to 30 mm (1.2 in) long. Seeds light brown.
