Haworthia pumila, also known as the Miniature Aloe or Pearl Plant, is native to South Africa and can grow up to 12 inches in height. Belonging to the Asphodeloideae family, the plant is both compact and stemless. It goes dormant in summer.

Growth Rate

This plant is one that looks like a miniature aloe and is relatively slow growing. Haworthia pumila grows to be a bit larger than most other species and can live as long as 40 years.

Flowering

The Pearl Plant produces large, waxy brownish-white flowers in the summertime. These flowers transition to seeds in the autumn.

Watering and Feeding

During the spring, summer, and early autumn, water the plant moderately. For pearl plant care, you do not need fertilizer as it does well with nourishment from a good soil mixture.

Soil

Use a porous, well-draining, non-acidic potting mix for pearl plant Haworthia. A combination of two parts of good quality potting soil and one part perlite or coarse sand works well.

Hardiness

If you live in a very cold climate you’ll need to bring your Pearl Plants indoors during the winter since they have a frost tolerance of -1.1°C. The hardiness zone is between 10a to 11b.

Light

Indoors or outdoors, keep this Haworthia in bright, indirect sunlight. The right amount of light facilitates the growth of attractive, pearl-like white tubercles.

Propagation

The plant will produce offsets in the summertime. To start new plants, just pull away the number of offsets you want and pot them up as mature plants.

The Miniature Aloe is a very popular potted and container plant and also makes an excellent addition to a peaceful garden.
