The Pfeiffera boliviana is a distinctive epiphytic cactus valued for its unusual trailing growth and delicate flowers. Its long, many-branched stems can form a cascading mass reaching up to 3 feet in overall length, making this unusual cactus especially well suited to hanging baskets, elevated shelves, and indoor plant displays where its pendulous growth can spill gracefully downward.

Native to Bolivia, particularly the Yungas region, this plant has also been known as Lepismium bolivianum and Rhipsalis boliviana, names that may still appear in older plant references and nursery collections.

The green stems are somewhat four-angled and flattened, with individual branches or stem sections growing up to 12 inches long and about 0.8 inches wide.

Small bristles may also appear around the areoles, adding subtle texture to the slender, cascading stems.

During spring and early summer, the creamy-white to soft pink blooms are usually produced singly along the stems, although two or three flowers may occasionally emerge from the same areole.

Their delicate appearance adds seasonal interest to the cascading plant, while the open flowers may also provide a potential source of nectar and pollen for small pollinators.

When it comes to care your plant, it prefers a well-drained specialized cactus mix. Indoors, it prefers bright filtered or indirect light, moderate to high humidity, and warm indoor temperatures; a balanced liquid NPK fertilizer during active growth can support healthy development. Rhipsalis is not highly drought tolerant and needs regular watering to stay healthy, but the soil should be allowed to partially dry between waterings. Overwatering or allowing the roots to remain constantly wet can lead to weak, unhealthy growth and root rot.

Outdoors, it is best suited to USDA Zones 10–11 in sheltered, frost-free locations with bright filtered light or partial shade rather than harsh afternoon sun.

Protect it from freezing temperatures, and remember that its epiphytic nature means it appreciates excellent drainage and good air circulation.

Pfeiffera boliviana is considered a pet-safe plant, making it a suitable choice for homes with cats and dogs. Its trailing, epiphytic growth also makes it easy to display in a hanging basket or elevated planter, helping keep it safely out of reach of curious pets while adding a beautiful cascading accent to your indoor space.

Overall, its graceful trailing stems, unusual flattened segments, and delicate seasonal flowers make Pfeiffera boliviana an excellent choice for collectors seeking an uncommon hanging cactus with a tropical character. With bright filtered light, an airy growing medium, careful watering, and protection from frost, it can become a long-lasting and rewarding addition to an indoor or warm-climate plant collection.
