TThe Variegated Cobweb Spiderwort, botanically known as Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Variegata’, is an attractive trailing houseplant with soft, woolly foliage and distinctive variegation. Its small leaves are covered in fine white hairs, giving them a velvety, silver green appearance, while the variegated form develops creamy-white to pale yellow markings.

The soft, white-haired foliage is why it is also called Variegated White Velvet. Its trailing stems can spill gracefully from containers and hanging baskets, while the plant can also be grown as a low-growing ground cover outdoors in suitable climates.

a close up image of Variegated Cobweb Spiderwort - Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata

Native to northeastern Mexico, the foliage is the main attraction of Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Variegata’.

Its small, oval leaves can display creamy-white, pale yellow, or lighter green streaks and patches against the green to silver-green background.

The stems initially grow upright but gradually spread outward and may trail as the plant matures, creating a full, cascading appearance around the edges of a container.

This Tradescantia generally stays compact, reaching around 12 inches tall and up to 18 inches wide under suitable growing conditions. Its spreading habit allows the plant to fill out more horizontally than vertically, making it a useful choice for smaller spaces and decorative containers.

The flowers are small but add a lovely splash of color during the warmer months. Three-petaled pink to magenta flowers can appear in summer when the plant receives suitable growing conditions. The blooms provide a colorful contrast to the lighter foliage without taking attention away from the plant's distinctive leaves.

When and How to Water Your Variegated Cobweb Spiderwort

These semi-succulent stores moisture within their thick stems and fleshy leaves. Allow the top 50% to 70% of the potting mix to dry out thoroughly between waterings. Avoid overwatering or leaving standing water in the drainage tray, as excess moisture quickly leads to root rot and leaves the woolly foliage susceptible to fungal decay.

The Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata typically requires watering every 7–10 days during its active spring and summer growth phase, reducing to every 2–3 weeks during winter dormancy. Always bottom-water or direct the watering spout at the soil level to keep the fuzzy leaves dry.

During spring and summer, check the substrate by inserting a finger two inches deep into the pot. When dry, soak the soil thoroughly with room-temperature water until it drains freely from the bottom openings, then empty the saucer completely.

During fall and winter, watering frequency drastically reduces as growth slows. Allow the potting mix to dry out almost completely before supplying a light drink to protect the delicate root system from cold, damp conditions.

Light Requirements – Where to Place Your Variegated Spiderwort Plant

an image of Variegated Cobweb Spiderwort - Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata plant

When growing indoors, place your plant in bright, indirect light or morning direct sun for 6 to 8 hours daily.

An east-facing window or a spot placed a few feet away from a south- or west-facing window offers ideal light levels to maintain bold leaf variegation and prevent leggy stem growth.

Avoid harsh, unshaded direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the delicate white stripes and dry out the protective cobweb hairs.

When grown outdoors, it thrives in partial shade or morning sun within USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11. Position it under a covered patio or porch where it receives bright, filtered light. In cooler zones, grow it as a container plant and move it indoors before evening temperatures drop below 50°F.

Adequate light is essential to preserve the distinct cream and pink variegation. Low light levels cause the bright striping to revert to solid green while forcing the stems to stretch awkwardly. Rotating the planter monthly ensures even foliage growth on all sides.

Optimal Soil & Fertilizer Needs

Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata requires a gritty, porous soil mix that drains rapidly while providing ample root aeration. Heavy, dense potting soils hold excessive moisture, leading to stem collapse and root decay. Instead, make or buy a well-draining potting mix, or ideally use our specialized potting mix that contains 5 natural substrates and mycorrhizae to promote the development of a strong root system that helps your houseplant to thrive.

This plant is a light feeder. Feed every 4 to 6 weeks using a balanced liquid houseplant fertilizer (NPK) diluted to half strength. Avoid overfeeding, as high nitrogen levels can dilute the striking leaf variegation. Stop fertilizing entirely during fall and winter to allow the plant its natural rest period.

Hardiness Zone & More

an image of a USDA map 9-11

In most parts of the United States, Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata is grown as an indoor houseplant.

Outdoors, it survives year-round in frost-free regions across USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11, performing well in rock gardens, outdoor containers, and shaded patios.

It prefers warm temperatures between 65°F and 80°F and must be protected from freezing conditions or prolonged cold exposure below 50°F.

Unlike delicate tropical foliage plants, it tolerates average to low household air humidity, making it exceptionally well-suited for home environments without requiring external humidifiers.

Wildlife – Cobweb spiderwort Flowers Attract the Following Friendly Pollinators

The flowers of the Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata attract several essential pollinators, including bees, butterflies, moths, and beneficial insects. These vibrant magenta flower clusters help support local pollinator activity and add extra wildlife value to landscapes where Cobweb Spiderwort is grown outdoors.

According to the ASPCA, Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata is considered mildly toxic to cats, dogs, and horses. The plant's sap contains calcium oxalate crystals that can cause mild oral irritation, drooling, or skin redness upon chewing or contact. Styling your plant in an elevated pot or hanging planter keeps curious pets safe while displaying its trailing foliage at eye level.

How to Propagate Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata

Propagating this variegated plant is fast and straightforward using stem cuttings taken during spring or summer.

  1. Start by using clean, sharp shears to cut 3- to 5-inch healthy stem tips just below a leaf node.
  2. Next, remove the bottom 1 inch of leaves to expose the nodes, allowing the cut end to callus in a dry area for 24 hours.
  3. Once calloused, insert the stem directly into a pot filled with moist, well-draining succulent soil or place it in a jar of clean water.
  4. Finally, keep the cutting in warm, bright indirect light, and roots will develop within 10 to 14 days, after which any water-rooted cuttings can be potted into soil.

Key Takeaways

  1. The Variegated Cobweb Spiderwort is popular for its velvety, white-haired leaves, which give this trailing houseplant a soft and distinctive appearance.
  2. The variegated foliage adds extra visual interest with creamy-white to pale yellow markings that contrast beautifully with the green to silvery-green leaves.
  3. The trailing growth makes this plant especially versatile, allowing it to spill from hanging baskets and containers or spread as a ground cover outdoors in suitable climates.
  4. The plant is relatively drought-tolerant, making it appealing to growers who want an attractive houseplant without frequent watering.
  5. The pink to magenta summer flowers add a bright seasonal display, creating a lovely contrast against the plant’s pale, textured foliage.
  6. The combination of fuzzy foliage, variegation, and trailing growth makes it stand out from many other Tradescantia varieties, giving collectors several reasons to add it to their plant collection.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the variegated cobweb spiderwort (Tradescantia sillamontana ‘Variegata’) is an eye-catching perennial that combines the charm of White Velvet's fuzzy, silver foliage with the added interest of variegation. Its compact spreading habit, colorful flowers, unusual texture, and adaptation to relatively dry conditions make it an excellent choice for containers and indoor plant collections. For anyone looking for a Tradescantia that feels completely different from the usual green or striped varieties, this variegated White Velvet is a particularly memorable choice.

  • How do you care for Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata?

    1. Soil: Plant in a gritty, well-aerated cactus and succulent mix amended with 30% perlite, pumice, or coarse sand to guarantee rapid drainage.
    2. Watering: Allow the top 50% to 70% of the potting mix to dry out completely between waterings, keeping foliage dry by directing water straight to the soil level.
    3. Indoor Light and Temp: Provide 6 to 8 hours of bright, indirect sunlight daily near an east-facing window while maintaining comfortable room temperatures between 65°F and 80°F.
    4. Outdoor USDA Zones and Light: Grow outdoors in partial shade or morning sun within USDA Hardiness Zones 9–11, protecting the leaves from harsh afternoon rays.
    5. Fertilizer: Apply a balanced liquid NPK houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength once every 4- 6 months during spring and summer, suspending all feeding during fall and winter.

  • Is Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata rare?

Yes, the variegated form of Tradescantia sillamontana is much less common than the standard green species. Its unique white-and-pink foliage striping combined with silvery cobweb hairs makes it a sought-after collector item.

  • Why is my Tradescantia sillamontana losing its variegation?

Loss of variegation is typically caused by inadequate light. When the plant does not receive enough indirect sunlight, it produces more chlorophyll (green pigment) to capture light, causing the creamy white stripes to fade or turn green. Move it to a brighter location to encourage bright leaf patterns.

Common Pests & Problems with Tradescantia sillamontana Variegata

It is generally resistant to pests when grown in proper indoor conditions. Don't worry, just keep the following care tips in mind to address any potential issues quickly:

  1. Faded or Reverting Leaves: Pale foliage or a loss of pink and white striping is caused by insufficient sunlight. Move the plant closer to a bright window with indirect light to restore vivid variegation.
  2. Mushy, Soft Stems: Soft or collapsing stems are a clear sign of overwatering and impending root rot. Pause watering immediately, trim away any damaged or decaying roots, and repot the plant into fresh, dry, gritty soil.
  3. Brown, Crisp Leaf Edges: Crispy leaf tips indicate stress from intense direct afternoon sunlight or severe underwatering. Move the container away from harsh rays and evaluate the soil moisture to ensure it receives adequate water.
  4. Spider Mites & Mealybugs: These common pests may hide under the webbed leaf surfaces and feed on sap. Wipe affected areas with a cotton swab dipped in 70% isopropyl alcohol or apply organic insecticidal soap to clear the infestation.
