About this Plant:
----------------------
Oroya peruviana is a slow-growing perennial cactus species that is native to the high mountains of the Andes. It is usually solitary but may produce small clumps with age. The plant has a globular form with many ribs and usually dense pectinate spines. The spines are very varied in form and color, often appressed against the plant body in a manner reminiscent of a bird’s nest.
The plant produces small, bell to funnel-shaped flowers that are often very numerous. These flowers are produced from young areoles, in a dense cluster or ring around the crown of the plant. The flowers are pink-orange-red with a whitish to lemon yellow center.
Oroya peruviana is extremely variable and has adapted to survive in extremely rocky habitats that other plants can’t survive in because of the lack of soil and how dry it is. The plants growing at higher altitudes are exposed to appreciable freezing in a tropical alpine climate where summer nighttime temperatures can be -8° C.
The plant is widespread in the Central Peruvian Andes at high elevations from Oroya to Cuzco. The altitude of its habitat ranges from 3000-4700 meters above sea level.
