Gymnocalycium berchtii is a tiny geophyte with a single, flattened stem that grows slowly atop a thick taproot underground. This species shows a large amount of variation in spines. Most plants have black-brown spines, and some have very light ochraceous spines with light brown bases. Flowers range in color from pearl-white to lilac, with a brownish pink throat.
