Agave Stricta is also known as the Hedgehog Agave and is native to Southern Mexico, Puebla, and Oaxaca! Belonging to the Asparagaceae family, the succulent forms perfect spherical roses and can grow up to 20 inches tall. It goes dormant in the winters and the growth rate slows down in fall.
Growth Rate
Even though these plants are slow growing, there is also a plus side to their rate of growth. Agave Stricta and thrive even if it has to go through a bit of neglect.
Flowering
The flowers bloom in summer and are reddish-purple in color. They are funnel-shaped.
Watering and Feeding
No watering is required during winters, water once a month during spring and summer. They require moderate watering throughout spring and fall. Use organic fertilizer to feed them during spring in small amounts.
Soil
Agave Stricta and make do with any kind of soil provided it has good drainage. For ideal conditions, provide a sandy or rocky potting mix.
Hardiness
While the plant enjoys warm temperatures, it has no such issue with cooler temperatures either. This is shown in its frost tolerance of -6.7° C and hardiness zone of 9a to 11b.
Light
The more direct sunlight you expose the hedgehog plant to, the better. If they are kept in too much shade, it can lead to etiolation.
Propagation
Propagate through offsets that are also known as pups. Easily dislodge them from the soil by moving them back and forth.
The good news is that the hedgehog plants are long-lived and they are known to produce plenty of offsets that can replace your parent plant once it dies.
