Gymnocalycium chiquitanum - Chin Cactus

Gymnocalycium chiquitanum often develops alone, as flattened, spherical, grey green to light-green, and occasionally crimson spilling branches that can grow to heights of at least 2-4cm and diameters of 6-9cm. The 6-7 ribs have noticeable protrusions that resemble chins. The central spine, which is occasionally present, is 1.5-2cm long. The 5-9 bent-edge spines range in color from grey to yellowish brown, with a darker tip. The size ranges from 1-2.5cm (about 0.98 in). This Gymnocalycium blooms purple-pink flowers, but are occasionally white or salmon-colored. It also produces up to 2cm long, dark bluish purple, spindle-shaped fruits.

Gymnocalycium can endure very bright conditions, but it prefers filtered sunshine or afternoon shade. Indoors, it requires intense light, including some direct sunlight. Strong light tends to turn the plant bronze, which promotes flowering and the creation of hefty spines, but excessive exposure to direct sunlight during the hottest part of the day in the summer is likely to result in sun scorch or stunted growth. Typically, the soil is a rich sandy loam.

Throughout the summer, it requires light to heavy waterings, but don't overwater. In the summer, fertilize with a high potassium content.
