The name Chocolate Drop comes from the large, oval-shaped chocolate brown spine shields that line the margins of the 4-angled stems. This Chocolate Drop cactus is part of the Spurge family, which is one of the largest genera of flowering plants in the world. Spurges are similar to cacti in terms of their ability to withstand droughts and their overall shape, but they are not actually cacti. 

The Chocolate Drop is an impressively detailed plant, and the cocoa-brown spine shields that highlight the green branches give it a little extra allure. Spine shields are pinkish-rose when in the growing phase but turn to chocolate brown with maturity. They have simplified blooms with no petals, and it is their architecture that people most admire.  This plant is also called the Candelabra Tree because of its tree-like branching habit. It grows best in warm conditions and its active growth period is usually late spring and summer. Therefore, they are suitable for outdoor cultivation all year round in USDA zones 10 -11. Outside of these areas, growers can grow Euphorbia ingens 'Chocolate drop' year-round indoors or in pots so the plants can spend the winter indoors. 

This drought-tolerant plant is easy to care for and doesn't require much attention.
