Euphorbia Horrida Major Nova

Introducing the Euphorbia horrida major nova, which is a vibrant member of the Euphobia horrida. The African milk barrel gets its name from the milky white sap.

This Euphorbia succulent grows as a clump-forming spiny succulent with sharp ridges on the stems lined with thorns. At times, one can see white and green striped markings on the stem, which is covered in rows of sharp, spine-like tubercles, giving it a spiky and textured appearance. As it gets mature your African milk barrel ribs become wavy. The growth habit of this Euphorbia horrida major nova succulent is similar to that of cactus barrel cacti.  It grows about 12 inches in height, exhibiting a prolonged growth rate.

The flowers of the Euphorbia horrida major nova are yellowish green, appear at the top of the Euphorbia plant and usually bloom in summer. The flowers aren't showy or large, but they add a nice contrast to the blue-green color of the cactus itself.

When it comes to care, your Euphorbia horrida major nova needs full sun to partial shade to thrive. It can tolerate partial shade, but too much shade may cause the stem to elongate and lose its compact shape. As for watering, it's important to let the soil dry out completely between waterings to prevent root rot. The African milk barrel succulent cannot tolerate higher amounts of water and may rot to death.

Euphorbia horrida major nova needs well-draining succulent soil, and the containers should have adequate holes. When growing indoors, it prefers temperatures between 65-85°F. If you are growing outdoors, the USDA Zone 10 is best for your African milk barrel.  The Euphorbia horrida nova is very frost-hardy to 5 F. You can use seeds or cuttings to propagate the Euphorbia horrida major nova succulent.

Additionally, Euphorbia horrida major nova is mildly toxic to both humans and pets as it releases a white sappy substance that can irritate the skin. It is best to use gloves to keep your hands protected.
